PARAM AGRICULTURAL SOIL SURVEYS

INTRODUCTION

In agriculture, a green manure is a crop grown for a specific period and then ploughed under and incorporated into the soils primarily to improve soil fertility for the main crop. It also performs multiple functions such as improving soil water balance, reducing weed competition and recycling nutrients to the primary crop. A living green manure such as Mucuna bracteata is cultivated as an intercrop to co-exist with the primary crop, the oil palm, and provide the above services perpetually.

This one-day Seminar and Field Tour (29th November 2006) aims to bring together experts on the cultivation of Mucuna bracteata on a large scale to share their experimental results and field experiences with us.

In conjunction with this Seminar, a 1½-day Soil Familiarisation Tour led by Dr. S. Paramananthan will be held on 30th November to 1st December 2006 to examine soils under oil palm in Jengka Triangle. We shall also discuss the growth, nutrition and yield of oil palm.

Due to the small conference hall and logistics, we shall restrict the Seminar to 200 participants and Soil Tour to 100 on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The seminar will be held in Dewan Melur, Sg. Tekam. Please arrange your own accommodation. We suggest you stay in
